Mini remodel

September 22, 2009

I believe it was sometime last year, we set out on a journey to remodel our condo. It started with the hideous carpet – stains, duct tape residue from previous owners – had to go. Then, it was the paint. Next, the bathroom. Now it is clear why people can get obsessed with home projects!

Over the course of about 2 months we managed to update 3 walls with fresh paint, have new carpet installed in the bedroom and living area, get marmoleum in the bathroom, kick out the old toilet in place of a new one, and purge our space of nearly all unused, old, and otherwise OK to discard items. That last action felt utterly satisfying, as hard as it was to let go of some things.

Now our space is tidy, we have barely any “piles” (you know, stuff that can’t ever really get put away??), and when I come home I don’t feel quite so claustrophobic. The best part is that Bryan and I did this together, it was a combination of efforts for both of us the whole way through.

Painting is fun!

June 28, 2009

For what feels like eternity, we have been talking about painting our walls. I always wanted to paint the bathroom and one of the bedroom walls – the color at the time I moved in was not what I would have ever chosen to see every morning. Bryan got in on this movement and he brought home color wheels to get us started. We went back and forth on colors for what could have been 60 days. It became my chore after work, to help select color pairs. It felt like forever!

This is what we decided on:

  • Bar will is now “grey horse”, an almost light sage/soft greenish blue.
  • Accent wall in living room is “moonshine”, a very light and creamy blue that really opens up our living space.
  • Bathroom paint can says “Touch of Green” but I’d say it’s “moonlight” or “sea breeze”. It’s the lightest and brightest turquoise, a little more blue than green. Odd name that is?
  • Bedroom, I don’t know the color names but we selected a very light brown/tan and will paint a grass or trees silhouette over, in a darker brown. It was grass until last week when Bryan decided he likes trees better.

We chose what we felt were “safe” colors since we’re hoping to put this on the market within 12 months and don’t want to come off as unappealing to buyers.

Bar and accent wall are done! I can’t wait to get the rest of our painting finished because that will mean we can lay in nice new wool carpet for most of the house, and a dark smooth marmoleum in the bathroom. Have you put your feet on marmoleum before? It is very cool and smooth, different than vinyl.
